Much as the Native Americans and Taoists before them, Astrologers are merely looking to the divine process of Creation, of Life, for Guidance. We have simply extended our gaze from the Earth skyward. As a human the need to anticipate the future is hard-wired into your very being. The “prime directive” of Star Trek is really not that far-fetched. Evolution has made you into a seeker. As Daniel Quinn, the author of the incredibly enlightened Ishmael series puts it: We became human by becoming hunters. Having evolved as hunters, humans have an ingrained need to predict the future. In fact, a recent scientific study indicated humans are indeed veritable predicting machines. With only a single event to judge by, most people were able to predict outcomes –apparently unconsciously using a variety of complex probability distributions.
Psychologist George Kelly theorized that a person’s psychological processes are channeled by the way in which he/she anticipates events. He believed we constantly use mental constructs as templates (like symbols/signs) to anticipate events. Anxiety occurs when we can’t predict future events. We then adjust our constructs with new information. This is a constant process (like the movement of the planets!). This need to anticipate/predict is so ingrained that we extended it from the practice of tracking game to tracking the weather and seasons when we became agriculturalists. Enter the Zodiac and the Solar calendar. This evolved into the tracking of celestial “omens” for the King and Kingdom. From there we used Astrology to track possible eventualities in war, commerce, and eventually astrology was extended to the individual where we would track his/her “fate.” Modern psychological astrology has sought to unite inner experience with outer experience and thereby replace “fate” with personal empowerment.
Personal empowerment is most succinctly symbolized by the Sun in Astrology. So Sun Sign horoscopes track the relationship of the planetary pantheon to the placment of the Sun. Many Astrologers feel this is horribly one dimensional in that it excludes the quickest moving and therefore most individual factors of the birth horoscope -The Moon and Ascendant. An easy solution is to read the column for each of the "big three" and see what commonalities arise and what resonates with your intuition.
